Why Free Software??

The evidence is overwhelming. Free Software is gaining market share in almost every area of interest. Some Free Software requires a level of expertise to implement but the majority does not. In this eBook even entry level computer users will find information and programs that are simple and easy to use. Many of the programs listed will actually improve the security of your computer making it less vulnerable to virus and malware attacks. I personally have used free anti-virus software for over seven years, and knock on wood; I’ve never been struck with a debilitating virus or worm. This eBook will share with you some of the programs I have used with great success.

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY download on this page I endorse is my Ebook download located in the right column. Please read the Ebook first to learn how to critique free software and download responsibly.

Until further notice, do not download AVG Free if you are running a 64bit machine.

The Free World is a wonderful world!! Enjoy your OpenWare products and share the info with a friend. Best regards, LindaV

Photography

It seems like the development of digital cameras has given everyone a renewed interest in photography. We all have cameras; there are cameras in our phones and webcams in our computers. The program choices for processing your pics are overwhelming. Some of us choose to use the software that came with the camera; most of the time that software is limiting. Others choose to purchase large programs, many of which are industry standards for professionals but the average shutterbug will never use all the features that are available. We pay big bucks for features we will never use and are hard to learn. I love some of those large expensive programs, but quite frankly with constant updates the learning curve can be overwhelming. Imagine having free software that can help you sort and rate your photos helping you to decide what to keep, archive or delete. Free software can get the red out of eyes, resize or crop your photos, make them lighter or darker, adjust color and increase or decrease contrast with the click of a mouse. When you get all done you can create a digital scrapbook or share them online. All these features are available with free software.

The Artist in You

50 Free Programs include links to CAD options; programs that provide sketching features and programs that allow you to create original drawings. Video programs can convert media, create morphing effects and turn your video or webcam into a movie making machine.

Are you musically inclined? 50 Free Programs also includes the listing of programs for guitar chording, guitar lessons and adding synthesizer features. Are you interested in other instruments? Hopefully the hints and tips given in the beginning of the book will give you ideas on how to safely search for other programs to aid you in learning more about the music or instruments you enjoy.

Education

Did you know that MIT now provides Open CourseWare? No, you can’t get a degree from studying it, but if you are considering advanced learning or future college degree programs, imagine the wealth of information that is available with the click of a mouse. Looking programs that are more related to your life and day to day challenges? 50 Free Programs includes the listing of software that can help you learn a foreign language; English? French? Spanish? Planning a vacation and want to learn some of the local language and culture? Why not discover learning with free software. Educational programs include some of the best options for learning geography, mathematics or simply improve your typing or memory skills. There are lots of choices in the world of Open Source Free Software.

Web Development

Today everyone wants to have a webpage but there is a financial challenge if you can’t build it yourself or if you are unable to edit or change the content yourself. Programmers fees can build and build. Instead, why not choose to build your own website? Or at least have control over it, or at least understand what it takes to build it. Today the best web development programs are open source with thousands of pre-designed templates and plug-ins. Looking for a new career? How about web development? It doesn’t take money, with free programs and instructions, the primary cost will be your time and commitment.

Office Productivity

I’m going to stick my neck out and bet that the majority of the license software you purchased can be replaced with free software. From label design, to bar-coding, to spreadsheets and communication software, it’s all available for Free! Not only is available for Free but literally millions of subscribers have downloaded and tested these programs before you have downloaded your copy of 50 Free Programs.

This book will not have all the answers, my hope is it will open your eyes to the possibilities Free Software provides.

eBook of Free Software

I wrote this eBook to share information on Free Software and OpenWare available on the web. The eBook will give you hints and tips on where to look for free software and preferred ways to download it. The book will also introducing you to some programs with forums and support groups that can help you learn and grow with the vision of free software development.

Open Ware and the quality of Free Software also referred to as Open Source Software, (OSS) has come a long way in recent years. Many of the programs listed are actually preferred by users over commercially sold software available in stores. It is not unusual for traditional over-the-counter software to be slightly out of date before you buy it and rarely do these programs include an option for free updates. With true OpenSource Free Software, not only are the programs free so are the updates!
